Study on the synthetic polymer support used by the contemporary portuguese painter Daniel Vasconcelos Melim

Abstract

The research presented here aims to identify the synthetic polymer used by the contemporary Portuguese painter Daniel Vasconcelos Melim as a support for his paintings made in acrylic paint, to study its physical and chemical properties and to identify the most frequent change phenomena. For the identification and comparative study of the synthetic polymer used, the following tests were performed: Visible and Ultraviolet Spectroscopy (UV-Vis); Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy with Attenuated Total Reflection (HATR-FTIR); density measurements and solubility tests in different solvents; pyrolysis and flame tests. and the organic solvent extraction method with a Soxhlet extractor on samples of RENOLIT - SE brand thermoplastic membranes from different years, namely 2011 and 2018. Aging tests were also carried out on membrane samples for 67 days at room temperature of 21 oC and at a temperature of 70 oC in order to identify some phenomena of alteration, such as: colour change and loss of mass.

Maria Coromoto Gomes Correia Leite, Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa

Maria Coromoto Gomes Correia Leite: Professor of Physics and Chemistry at the Grouping of Schools Raul Proença, in Caldas da Rainha. Her first degree was in Engineering Ceramics and Glass, by the University of Aveiro in 1998 and her second degree is in Physics and Chemistry (Teaching), by the University of the Azores in 2005. She teaches Physics and Chemistry since 2000. Attends the 2nd Masters in Sciences of the Art and Heritage of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. Participated in September 2018 at the Colloquium on Heritage Conservation Investigations and in May 2019 at the Plastics Heritage Congress.

Ana Bailão, Faculdade de Belas Artes Universidade de Lisboa, FBAUL/CIEBA

Ana Bailão:  Diploma in Conservation and Restoration by the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar (2005) and a master´s degree in Painting Conservation by the Portuguese Catholic University (2010). The master research was about methodologies and techniques of retouching. PhD in Conservation of Paintings at the same university, in collaboration with the Centro de Investigação em Ciência e Tecnologia das Artes (CITAR) and the Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural de España (IPCE), Madrid. The doctoral research was about the criteria and methodologies which might help to enhance the quality of painting retouching. The projects are presented through publications, lectures, exhibitions and presentations. Teaching about conservation and restoration, especially chromatic retouching, since 2008. Since 2004 carrying out conservation and restoration works.
