Expansion of the study of the technique of gilded marbled imitation. Contributions derived from new cases
Abstract
Presented here are a total of seventeen new examples of altarpieces with gilded marbles imitation discovered since 2017. Although the techniques are similar to the known variations, the existence of these new works is notable in that they expand the timeline for the imitation of marbled gold, beginning now sixty-four years earlier than previously believed, coinciding with the consolidation of the fully baroque altarpiece, and ending twenty years later than what had been documented in the first phase of this study. Additionally, it has been discovered that this technique was not only used in altarpieces, but in frames and architectural elements as well.
