Technical study and conservative proposal of the Chaozhou Chinese embroidery "One Hundred Birds Playing Homage to the Phoenix (百鳥朝鳳)"
Abstract
This article presents the study of Chinese silk embroidery, known as One Hundred Birds Playing Homage to the Phoenix, from the early twentieth century. The technical-artistic exams determined its style as Chaozhou, its stitches, weave, and elaboration. A detailed microscopic analysis, dye solubility test, pH and colorimetry were carried out to determine the component materials of the embroidery, as well as create its color palette and quantify the loss of color between the front and back. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometry (FTIR) analysis was used to verify the advanced degree of polymeric deterioration of the silk fibers and their dyes. With all this, it has been possible to propose the appropriate intervention to safeguard this precious cultural heritage, since it is an example of a type of work of great interest due to the historical and cultural context to which it belongs.
