Study of compositional materials used in the manufacture of an 18th century Berber manuscript
Abstract
This paper presents the analytical study of an 18th-century Berber manuscript in which it has been possible to characterize the materials used for its manufacture, both the fibers used to make the support and the inks, red and black used for writing, such as the dye used to tint the back-cover paper, added later. The multi-technique methodology includes conventional techniques, such as optical microscopy, FESEM-EDX, and FTIR spectroscopy, combined with advanced analysis techniques, such as VIMP and FIB-FESEM-EDX, which provide detailed information on the samples in a nanoinvasive way.
