Maintenance of the façades of the Cathedral of Seville. An example of sustainable intervention
Abstract
Between the years 1999 and 2006 the Spanish National Institute for Cultural Heritage (Instituto del Patrimonio Cultural de España, IPCE), led the restauration of the Portals of Nacimiento, Bautismo, Palos y Campanilla of the Cathedral of Sevilla. This project included an annual maintenance, that should be assumed by the Chapter of the Cathedral. This commitment has been translated in 20 years of collaboration and team work between the Chapter´s Technicians, the Conservation-Restorarion Company Artyco and the scientific support of the IPCE´s technicians.
This paper features the latest developements of the maintenance program in the last four years, consisting in the addition to the program of the Asunción Portal, that has been a challenge due to it´s great dimentions, technique and materials, and also the adjustment of the maintenance works to the current environmental laws, that has led to the replacement of some products used in the former years.
