Management, evaluation of the conservation needs and hierarchization of a collection through its inventory
Abstract
For the conservation of paleontological materials, it is essential to have all the information that affects each specimen in an orderly manner and based on the experience acquired in the conservation of the vertebrate collection from the Upper Cretaceous site of Lo Hueco (Fuentes, Cuenca), it has been designed a management-oriented database.
For data collection, information on the morphology and composition of the specimens and the state of conservation has been considered. All these data have been evaluated and calculated by combining in the same tool the valued information on the state of conservation, vulnerability to deterioration agents and the scientific, educational and historical value of the specimens, which facilitates the management of the collections. This information also allows to establish priorities in the strategies of conservation of the collection directed to the hierarchization of its needs.
