Exhibition of Contemporary Artistic Photography. Face-Mounting System: Specific Conservation Problems
Abstract
Material and technical evolution experienced by photography has been vertiginous and different photographic montage systems have been developed and succeeded. Both the aesthetic and preservation functions have always been present when planning the different mounting systems used to display photography throughout its history. Thus, it is possible to find from traditional assembly systems to options where the photographic copies or prints are an integral part of an indivisible -and irreversible- set whose constituent materials are, for the most part, of industrial origin. Among the latter we highlight the Face-mounting system, derived from the original patented mounting system called Diasec®.
The specific conservation problems associated with Face-mounting works responds to the alteration mechanisms developed by various factors, which we have identified and grouped following the ten agents of deterioration mentioned in the Risk Management used for Museum Heritage, related to the analysis system using the ABC scales and the risk assessment system contemplated by the ICCROM and the CCI. We believe that the study that we present can benefit both the artists, by expanding their control capacity and knowledge regarding the mounting systems chosen for the exhibition of their photographs, as well as the institutions in charge of the custody and maintenance of this type of collections.
