Industrial heritage ‘hanging by a thread’: the case study of the Companhia Nacional de Fiação e Tecidos de Torres Novas
Abstract
Urban changes in the entrepreneurial and economical fabrics can contribute to dismantling industrial complexes of enormous importance to local communities. The closure of the Companhia Nacional de Fiação e Tecidos in Torres Novas and the risk of losing the industrial complex and the assets that remain were the basis for the development of a research project regarding its importance for the local community. The size of the industrial complex and the difficulty of implementing a strategy for its preservation requires a process of maturation and integration with the local community’s expectations. This heritage is ‘hanging by a thread’, largely due to the lack of a sustainable strategy for preserving the huge complex and its existing assets. This article aims to reflect on the application of a creative conservation methodology to industrial heritage and the possibilities for interaction with the community in which it is located.
