Evaluation of the antimicrobial effectiveness of 222 nm UV-C light as a treatment strategy for the preservation of biological specimens in liquid from the “José Ricardo Cure Hakim” Collection at Universidad Militar Nueva Granada
Abstract
Biological collections are records of biodiversity. However, biodeterioration threatens their conservation, making evaluating treatments that mitigate the associated damage crucial. This article assessed the antimicrobial effectiveness of 222nm UV light against microorganisms on the skin of vertebrate specimens preserved in liquid from the "Jose Ricardo Cure Hakim" collection at Universidad Militar Nueva Granada, Cajicá, Colombia. Microorganisms were obtained by swabbing, isolated, and identified molecularly and morphologically. In vitro, antimicrobial activity was evaluated with microorganisms on glass beads at four time points. After irradiation, percentage inhibition was calculated. The effect on specimens was analyzed by swabbing. Bacillus and Paenibacillus genera were identified. 222nm UV light showed an inhibitory effect on bacterial growth in vitro and on specimens. The findings suggest new strategies to mitigate biodeterioration in liquid biological collections.
