Artistic intention, conservation and mutation in the current artwork: an hermeneutical approach
Abstract
The discipline of conservation and restoration of contemporary art usually uses the concept of artistic intention. The study of this intention is the first step in any conservation intervention in a work of contemporary art. However, the significance of this concept may vary from one discipline to another. This article presents a study of the importance of the role of the artist in the hermeneutical process of interpretation of the work, emphasizing the moderate intentionalism as a theory that can help conservators in the decision making process. At the same time, reflect on the needs of the documentation of contemporary art work, approaching the different ontological categories generated by passage of time on the work, and this, from the acceptance of ruin and death of the work as part of their existence.
